,e 1.
Summary During initial site testing and calibration of Westinghouse 7300 NLP, NSC and NRA QA Category I printed circuit cards, it was noted that some of the power supply sections were failed.
Thirteen printed circuit cards have been identified as Deing affected by this condition.
2.
Immediate Action Taken Nonconfonnance and Disposition Reports were issued for the defective prin-ted circuit cords.
Mr. R. J. Wallauer, Lead Conpliance Engineer - Beaver Valley Unit 2, noti-fied Mr. D. Limroth, NRC Region I of this concern on Septenber 9,1986.
3.
Description of Deficiency Thirteen Westinghouse series 7300 NLP, NSC and NRA Category I printed circuit cards have been identified as having f ail ed power supply sections.
4.
Analysis of Safety Implication Loss of post-accident monitoring information could limit the operator's ability to resolve accident conditions.
5.
Corrective Action To Resolve The Deficiency As reported in the Interim Report, 2NRC-6-106, dated October 9,1986, the BV-2 project was pursuing two likely root causes for the Westinghouse 7300 series printed circuit card failures.
These two causes were handling aanage and heat sensitivity.
Westinghouse has reviewed the subject prin-ted circuit card f ailures and could not detennine that the failure should be considered due to a common event unless the equipnent had been ener-gized in an uncontrolled environnent.
Additionally, Westinghouse has not identified the power supply on the 7300 series printed circuit cards as a generic concern through other failure reports and believes these are typi-cal randon failures and do not present a safety problen.
The defective power supplies have been replaced.
Additional corrective action has been taken to issue a site engineering memorandun, 2BVM-3807,
" Handling of Electronic P.C. Cards," to reduce the chance of danage due to improper handling.
As a result of the issuance of 2BVM-3807 and the activation of the instru-mentation roon air conditioning systen, a noticable decrease in f ailures has been experienced.
6.
Additional Report No additional reports are expected.
