';'3,3 July 24, 1986 CRJ/86/120 Mr. Charles E. MacDonald, Chief Transportation certification Branch Division of Fuel Cycle & Material Safety U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washin0 ton, DC 20555
Dear Mr. MacDonald:
Please consider this as a supplement to our letter of July 9, 1986 requesting an amendment to Certificste Of Compliance No. 9183.
We propose to insert the following paragraph on page 5-7 when the Safety Analysis Report for the NFS-4/NAC-1 Spent Fuel Shipping Cask is next revised:
" Auxiliary shielding in the form of 1/4 inch thick copper plate attached to an area of the cast outer shell within the neutron shield tank at the time of manufacture to provide uniform gamma shielding effectiveness, affords a 35%
reduction in gantna dose rates.
Should this p' late become dislodged for any reason, the dose rate would increase by a factor of 1.54 to 0.824 mrem /hr at 6 feet. This value is well under the regulatory limit of 10 mrem /hr for normnl transport conditions."
A check for $150.00 was enclosed with our letter of July 9,1986 in accordance with requirements of 10 CFR 170.
Should you have questions or require additional information, please contact me.
Sincerely, m
NUCLEAR A550PANCE CMP 0 RATION b
