NUCLEAR PROJECT NO. 1 DOCKET NO. 50-460 P0TENTIALLY REPORTABLE CONDITION 10CFR50.55(e)

DEFECTIVE WELDS ON RADIATION MONITOR DISPLAY PANELS

1. Telecon; CR Edwards, Supply System, to DJ Willet, NRC; subject same; dated July 10, 1984
2. Letter G01-84-209; RW Root to JB Martin; subject same; dated August 7, 1984 In reference 1 the Supply System informed your office of a potentially reportable deficiency under 10CFR50.55(e). Reference 2 provides a statement of the identified condition and a brief description of our planned actions to correct the identified deficiency. The purpose of this letter is to inform your office that we have eliminated the deficient condition for safety-related radiation monitors supplied to us by Kaman Instrumentation.

Although the Supply System WNP-1 Project has thirty-seven (37) monitors with the potential of having defective weld studs for the display panel boxes, only eight (8) of these monitors were intended to perform a safety-related function.

For non-technical reasons we took formal action on September 5, 1985 to downgrade the eight (8) safety-related monitors to QC II with the intent of using them as spare parts for the other non-safety related monitors. Upon restart of construction activities, we plan to purchase eight (8) new monitors from another supplier for the safety-related fonctions. As a prudent course of action, we still plan to perform the vendor recommended test on monitors used in non-safety related functions, and if needed, take corrective action.

However, we consider the potentially reportable condition resolved since the potentially defective safety-related monitors are no longer involved.

If you have questions, please advise.
