Dear Ms. Gifford:

I am responding to your letter of January 11,1999, regarding the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff's proposed criteria for the decontamination and decommissioning of the West Valley site, as described in SECY-98-251. On January 12,1999, the Commission held a public meeting that included tha participation of the West Valley Citizen Task Force (CTF). We appreciate the input of the CTF in this matter and commend the members of the CTC for mir efforts related to the resolution of tne various issues concerning the remediation of the West Valley site. The issue raised in your letter, regarding the need for a continued Federal government presence at the site, was commented on in the briefing. The Commission agrees that this is an important issue. Following the meeting, the Commission directed the staff to provide additional information (SECY-99-057, enclosed). Please be assured that the Commission will carefully consider this information m,d your comments in reaching its decisions on West Valley.
