TJohnson & r/f MFliegel MEMORANDUM FOR: Halcolm R. Knapp, Acting Chief PDR WMLU EHawkins, URF0 DGillen, WMLU FROM: Philip S. Justus, Acting Chief BJagannath, WMEG WMGT

SUBJECT:

REVIEW 0F ADDITIONAL SHIPROCK RIPRAP GRADATION TESTS I. accordance with discussions held between Dan Gillen and Ted Johnson, we have completed a review of the subject riprap gradation tests; these tests were submitted by DOE by letter dated June 4, 1986. The tests were required because of the questionability of previous gradation tests. The previous tests were performed because the rock did not meet required shape specifications. These aspects were discussed in our review memorandum to you dated April 25, 1986.

This review also indicated that the samples tested were likely to be too small to produce meaningful results. We concluded that additional gradation testing was needed to conclusively document that the rock available at the site was adequate.

During an NRC construction site visit during the week of May 5, 1986, NRC personnel selected several locations in the rock stockpile for DOE to obtain samples for testing. After the completion of the first gradation test on one of the selected samples weighing nearly two tons, DOE indicated that testing of such a large sample was very tedious and time-consuming and requested that smaller samples be tested. At another meeting in San Francisco, Ted Johnson evaluated this request and indicated that a smaller sample could be used.

(See memorandum dated June 5, 1986, from Ted Johnson to Ed Hawkins regarding Durango meetings).

Based on our review of the additional gradctions provided, we conclude that the riprap provided meets the gradation requirements of either Type B or Type B1 rock, since the average weight of the riprap is greater than required for both types. If you have any questions, please contact Ted Johnson at extension /4490.
