Dear Mr. Denton:
DISPOSAL OF EXEMPT TRASH IN ACCORDANCE WITH 10 CFR 20.302 - DOCKET NOS. 50-327 AND 50-328 The purpose of this letter is to document a telephone discussion between P. J. Hammons of my staff and Dr. Faith Brenneman of NRC on July 29, 1986.
By letter dated December 23, 1985 to William J. Dircks, TVA submitted an application requesting permission to dispose of up to 200 millicuries of extremely low-activity radioactive waste in a sanitary landfill each year.
Specifically, to dispose of low-activity trash from our Sequoyah Nuclear Plant by burial in the Summit sanitary landfill located in Hamilton County near Chattanooga, Tennessee. At the present time, NRC cannot locate our December 23, 1985 application; however, the Sequoyah Project Manager remembers such an application. Dr. Brenneman suggested that TVA resubmit the application.
Enclosed are three copies of our December 23, 1985 application to Mr. Dircks.
Also, enclosed are three copies of:
(1) EPRI NP-3299, " Segregation of Uncontaminated Dry Active Waste," (2) " Impacts of the Disposal of Exempt Trash in a Sanitary Landfill," and (3) Regulations Governing Solid Haste Processing and Disposal in Tennessee," in support of our application.
We appreciate your prompt attention on this request.
If you have any questions or if we can be of any assistance please get in touch with P. J. Hammons of my staff at FTS 858-2736.
Very truly yours, TENNESSEE VA LEY AUTHORITY R. L. Gridle, Director Nuclear Safe y and Licensing Enclosures (3) hbh b!K g7 001 P
