Braidwood Station Units 1 and 2 Fire Protection Program NRC Docket Nos. 50-456 and 50-457

Reference:

(a)

February 17, 1987 S.C. Hunsader letter' to H.R. Denton (b)

NUREG-1002, Safety Evaluation Report, Supplement 2, dated October, 1986

Dear Mr. Denton:

Reference (a) provided Commonwealth = Edison's commitment to install six inch thick removable concrete plugs for the equipment

' hatches located at elevation 426', near 12-Q and at elevation 364',

near 18-N in the Braidwood Auxiliary Building to provide appropriate fire protection measures at those locations.

The purpose of this letter to provide you with our plans for the other equipment hatches in the Auxiliary Building which are directly above the hatch at 364'.

Specifically, Commonwealth Edison intends to install concrete plugs for the hatchways at elevations 383' and 401', in the Auxiliary Building prior to Fuel Load of Braidwood Unit 2.

Access

-through these equipment hatches will be necessary to facilitate the completion of Unit 2.

Upon installation of these concrete plugs they will'be caulked in place with a fire resistant type of caulk.

As presented in reference (a), Commonwealth Edison station personnel have implemented hourly fire watches as a compensatory measure until the hatchways are sealed.

Also, Commonwealth Edison will take compensatory measures in the future when it becomes necessary to remove the concrete plugs.

, In Section 9.5.1.4 of reference (b) it was stated that the NRC staff observed that automatic sprinklers had not been installed to protect the stairway and hatchway in Zone 11.2-0 on elevation 346' of the Auxiliary Building.

The following gives the status of installation in this area.

Specifically, a concrete plug will be installed in the hatchway immediately above elevation 346' at elevation 364', near 18-N.

Also, automatic sprinklers have been installed immediately below the floor at elevation 364' to provide appropriate fire protection measures for the stairwell leading to elevation 346'.

Please address any questions concerning this matter to this office.
