St. Mary's Hospital 5801 Bremo Road Richmond, Virginia 23226

.6 This is to request renewal of our Materials License, number SNM-1375 to possess licensed materiel for explantation, recovery and disposal, but not for implantation, of nuclear-powered pacemakers.

Presently, we are following three patients who have been implanted with Modtronic Model 9000 nuclear-powered pacemakers. Each pacemal:er contains a 0.63 gram plutonium (principle radionuclide Pu-238) sealed source. Currently, our license allows for the possession of three individual sources with a maximum possession limit of 0.210 grams. The license also authorizes possession of these pacemakers for explantation, recovery and disposal, but not for implantation.

The conditions of the current license are appropriate for present and future activities. The only Hospital physician involve 3 with the pacemaker program is Yale H.
