Region IV 611 Ryan ' Plaza Drive, Suite 1000 Arlington, TX 76012 Re: Annual Report for the period 1 July 1983 to 30 June 1984 for license R-53 in accordance with 10CFR50.59(b).
(
The following information is submitted in accordance with the Federal Regulation requirement that an annual report on the University's reactor facility be submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
s
- 1. There have been no changes in our facility design. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved the 20 year license renewal for the reactor in December,.1983. Part of the libense renewal was the approval to increase the power level from 15 watts thermal to 100 watts. Included in the license renewal were a number of operating procedural changes to reflect the increase in maximum power level and the deletion of certain monitoring and limiting conditions of operation. Certain operating procedures and surveillance procedures were deleted or modified to reflect the changes in the new license.
All surveillance tests and inspections were within their normal ranges of approved values or conditions.
- 2. The reactor was operated 56 times for a total of 1003 watt-hours.
- 3. There were 19, inadvertent scrams for the reporting period.
There were no emergency shutdowns. Tne inadvertent scrams were the result of operator errors, electronic noise, accidental trips or noise transients.
4 There were no major maintenance operations performed during the reporting period.
- 5. Th'e re were a number of major changes to the facility procedures and survefilance tests for the reportir}g period as described in part 1.

- 6. No radioactive effluents were released or discharged to the environs beyond our effective control.
- 7. No environmental surveys were performed outside our -facility.
- 8. Were were no unusually high radiation exposures to the facility personnel or laboratory visitors. All the radiation and contamination surveys performed by the Radiation Safety Office were within normal ranges of acceptable values.
V 9. There were a few changes in our facility personnel.
a) Dr. Emin Yilmas resigned August 10, 1983, from the University and the Reactor Safety Committee.
b)- Dr. Steward Ryan (Physics Department) was appointed to replace Dr. Y11 mas.
c) Mr. Johnny James, the Reactor Supervisor, resigned from the University effective June 30, 1984.
