AEOD REPORT, "MOV FAILURE DUE TO HYDRAULIC LOCKUP FROM EXCESSIVE GREASE IN SPRING PACK" Enclosed for your information is a copy of the subject report. This report is l being forwarded individually, rather than the monthly batch distribution, '

because it identifies a situation where previous INP0 communication to the industry appears to provice inaccurate information concerning motor operated valves. The AE00 report utilizes information that may not have been previously available to INP0. The areas of concern include identification of which type of grease (EXXON rather than Mobil) was associated with the hydraulic lockup events and operating experience that provides evidence to illustrate the design change with the internal grease relief path may not be adequate to prevent hydraulic lockup under all conditions. Thus, the guidance in the SER about the design change " negating the need for the modification kit" appears to be inaccurate and it could mislead licensees about the possible need for corrective action.
