Maine Yankee Engineering Expertise on Shift Gentlemen:
The information you requested in Reference (b) follows:
1.
Currently Maine Yankee assigns a degreed Nuclear Safety Engineer (NSE) to each shift whenever the plant is not in the cold shutdown or lower condition. NSEs are certified as Shift Technical Advisors.
2.
Maine Yankee NSEs possess a bachelors degree or equivalent, in engineering, or a scientific discipline.
Equivalency is determined on a case by case determination of the following factors with approval of the Vice President of Operations.
a.
Additional formal education beyond required level.
b.
Additional experience in the area of responsibility.
c.
Related technical training.
d.
Supervisory or management experience.
e.
Demonstrated ability to communicate.
f.
Professional recognitions such as professional certification or licensing.
g.
USNRC Operator License.
h.
Certification of skills and knowledge by corporate management through performance demonstration and/or evaluation.

In December,1985 we submitted a Technical Specification change
. allowing us to combine a required Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) position with the STA position. Upon approval, we will use either the dual role option, STA option, or a combination to cover all shifts requiring STA coverage.
