(a)

Letter from Mr. A. E. Lundvall, Jr. (BG&E), to Mr. A. C. Thadani (NRC), Schedule for Compliance with 10 CFR 50.62, dated October 16,1985 Gentlemen:

Reference (a) provided our proposed schedule for meeting the requirements of the subject rule. In addition to providing the final implementation dates for Units 1 and 2, we noted that a more detailed schedule showing major milestones would be provided as soon as it has been developed, tentatively in the first quarter of 1986, and that the specific information required by the rule would be provided by the third quarter of 1986.

Since October of last year we have progressed sulficiently into the design of the required systems that we now expect to provide sufficient information to demonstrate compliance with the subject rule in the second quarter of this year. Our submittal will address the guidance accompanying the rule and the manner in which the Calvert Clif fs design satisfies the intent of that guidance. We expect to reference the results of the current Combustion Engineering Owners Group discussions with the NRC Staff in this regard. We believe that this approach should facilitate your review of our systems. Prompt staff review is important to us because the design has to be finalized and equipment ordered in the fourth quarter of this year for us to meet the implementation schedule agreed upon in Reference (a).
