SUBJECT:

SCHEDULE FOR DAVIS-BESSE FINDINGS PRIOR TO RESTART By memorandum dated April 16, 1986, you requested an update of the schedule for completion of the staff actions associated with recovery from the June 9, 1985 event. Your understanding that we intend to proceed with resolution of the IIT items independently from the cracked reactor coolant pump shaf t replacements is correct. The earliest projected restart schedule, based on shaft replacement, is October 15, 1986. Our current schedule for resolution of the IIT items is as follows:

June 2, 1986 Issue final staff safety evaluation for (week of) restart from the June 9, 1985 event June 27, 1986 ACRS Subcomittee July 10, 1986 ACRS Full Comittee July, 1986 Commission Meeting (to be scheduled in late July)

Licensee submittals addressing the remaining open items were received on April 15, 1986. Pending resolution of any issues associated with these submittals, we anticipate no difficulty in meeting the above schedule. We trust that this schedule is consistent with the Commission goal of addressing resolution of the IIT issues-in a timely manner.

Regarding the reactor coolant pump cracked shaft replacement, we anticipate that it will be conducted under 10 CFR Part 50.59 and a staff safety evaluation report will not be issued.
