NRC Docket Nos. 50-454 and 50-455

)

Dear Mr. Dani.on:

This is to inform you of the resolution of a human engineering deficiency (NED) in the Byron Units 1 and 2 control rooms. The HED involved the location of the range and volume controls for the source range nuclear ins;tru%entation channels. These controls have been relocated from the nuchwt instrumentation cabinet (2PM07J) to the main control board (2PM05J) of Bya Unit 2. Preoperational testing of the source range nuclear instrmentation channels with the relocated controls has been successfully completed on Syron Unit 2.

Sines testing of this modification on Byron Unit 2 has shown accept-able results, the same modification will be made on Byron Unit 1 prior to startup following the first refueling outage. This is in accordance with condition 2.C.7 of the Byron Unit 1 Facility Operating License NPF-37.

One signed original and fifteen copies of this letter are provided for NRC review.

Please direct any questions regarding this matter to this office.

Very truly yours, K. A. Ainger Nuclear Licensing Administrator 1m e
