SERVICE WATER POND DAM SAFETY INSPECTION RESULTS FOR VIRGIL C.
SUMMER NUCLEAR STATION
Dear Mr. Taylor:
l On February 27,1997, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, with Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) assistance, conducted a Category I Service Water Pond Dam inspection at the Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station We have received and evaluated the enclosed September 24,1997, FERC final Operat;on Inspection Report. We did not observe any conditions that we consider to be an immediate threat to the safety of the dams or the nuclear facility. However, page 11 of the FERC report contains a list of improvements that you should take to assure continued safety of your Category I service water pond dams. We discussed these improvements with you at the February 27,1997, exit meeting. The improvements are consistent with the Federal Guidelines for Dam Safety (1979) and the Dam Safety Program Act defined in the Water Resources Act of 1996.
Please provide a written response to us within 100 days of receipt of this letter indicating what actions you intend to take regarding these improve:ments. Please note that you do not need to respond to other findings and followup actions contained in the FERC report since the requested improvements are based on information contained in the report.
