Keppler Regional Administrator Region III U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, IL 60137
Subject:
Braidwood Station Units 1 and 2 Supplemental Information to Inspection Report Nos.
50-456/85-015 and 50-457/85-016 NRC Docket Nos. 50-456 and 50-457
Dear Mr. Keppler:
The subject inspection report contained a violation identified by NRC Inspector R.D.
Schulz which dealt with the failure to adequately control modifications to structural beams.
This violation was closed in NRC Inspection Report No. 456/85-052; 457/85-050, based on close-out of Commonwealth Edison Nonconformance Report (NCR) #740, which identified forty-nine (49) unauthorized beam modifications, forty-seven (47) of which were " accepted-as-is" and two (2) which required reinforcement to restore the design margin.
Due to previous commitments, additional information relating to the issue is being provided.
Subsequent to close-out of the above item, other activities prompted the Project Construction Superintendent to direct a 100% walkdown of the floor drain
(
systems.
It was during this walkdown that two additional unauthorized beam modifications were identified.
These two instances were addressed on Commonwealth Edison C h NCR #806 and l
dispositioned " accept-as-is" by Sargent & Lun4Y.
Based on the actions taken, Commosgead 3dison Co.
believes that the total population of unautnorized beam modifications, isolated to the floor drain systems, have been identified and resolved.
In addition, procedural and training requirements currently in place should preclude the recurrence of j
unauthorized beam modifications.
