Dear Chairman Jackson,
CONPOSH is an organization representing more than twenty neighborhoods in Sag Harbor. Our newsletter goes out to more than 500 local people and organizations.
As you now know we on the East End of Long Island are increas-ingly concerned about Northeast Utilities' Millstone Plant, less than 15 miles from our shores. Because of our topography evacuation in the case of nuclear accident is almost impossible.
and we are outside of the ordained 10 mile evacuation zone.
Now our local, state and federal officials have become active in putting forward New York's concerns about that flawed Connecticut facility. As you also know Millstone Reactor #3 has been continually shut down since its restart in June, 1999.
This past week the WasteWaterTank allowed more than 800 gallons of water containing radioactive tritium to leak into Long Island Sound. Our Congressman Michael Forbes has written to you this week calling for a permanent shutdown of this faulty reactor that can never be brought up to standards.
After Northeast Utilities' management had vowed to behave in an accountable manner towards the environment and after it had agreed to be in communication with New York officials about any problems at the facility, it has behaved in an unconscionable manner.
Please assure us you will not allow the restart of Millstone Beactor #2 while the flawed operation of Reactor #3 is endangering the already fragile ecosystems of the East End of Long Island.
Since you will be leaving the NRC, we hope you will leave reassured that no safety or environmental hazard will remain at Millstone. In the meantime, we would appreciate receiving any press releases or other inforn.:. tion relating to the Mill-stone plant and hope we will have a response to this letter.
Thank you, and good luck in your, exciting new post.
Sincerely yours, 1
Valerie Justin y
