O ENCLOSURE TMI-1 STATUS REPORT FOR THE PERIOD JULY 18 - 25, 1986 1.

Plant Status As of 8:00 a.m. on July 25, 1986, TMI-1 was operating at 100 percent power and at normal reactor coolant temperature (579 F) and pressure (2155 psig).

2.

Facility Operations Summary At the start of the period, the plant was operating at 100 percent power and continued to operate at 100 percent during the reporting period.

No significant operational problems were identified during the report period.

During this period, the following significant surveillances were completed:

Channel A reactor protection system calibration / check; inservice test of the "A" decay heat river water pump; and, surveillance testing on diesel-driven fire pump (see below).

Significant maintenance items included the restoration of the diesel-driven fire pump building area.

3.

Item of Special Interest Fire Pump Building Restoration Last week's status report briefly discussed damage to a diesel-driven fire pump building and related support equipment at TMI-1. No major damage was sustained by the diesel-driven pump; but support systems, such as electri-cal conduit and building fire protection deluge piping were damaged when the floor grating was blown through the roof.

Repairs to these components were completed. Temporary repairs were completed to the building housing the diesel-driven fire pump. The equipment malfunction that caused the vault area (sump) to overpressurize was attributed to a malfunctioning check valve, which apparently did not seat correctly and allowed the fire system to back-feed the closed / sealed vault from which the fire pump takes a suction. Another check valve which allows screen house river water to feed the vault area properly functioned to seal off this area at the time of the event.

As of Friday morning, July 25, 1986, satisfactory surveillance testing was completed for the fire pump itself, but the fire pump was not restored to service until additional work to fix a leak on the area deluge system was completed.

4.

Systematic Assessment of Licensee Performance (SALP)

The NRC Region I SALP board met on June 6, 1986, to discuss ifcensee per-formance between September 16, 1985, and April 30, 1986,- which included the TMI-1 restart period of September 16, 1985, to January 10, 1986. A management meeting between NRC and GPUN to discuss the SALP is scheduled for 9:00 a.m., July 30, 1986, at the NRC Region I Office in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. Members of the public may attend this meeting as observers.

2 Enclosure The subject SALP period is termed "SALP I," since it is the first of two SALP's that were directed by the Commission in their restart order of May 1985. The final report on an additional SAlp which focused on only the restart period (September 16, 1985, to January 10,1986) was issued May 14, 1986 (NRC Inspection Report No. 50-289/85-98).

5.

NRC Staff Activities During the Period During this report period work week, the NRC staff on site consisted of the senior resident inspector and one resident inspector.

The other two resident inspectors were on vacation for most of the report period.

The NRC staff at TMI-1 was comprised of the following personnel during the period:

R. Conte, Senior Resident Inspector C. Hix, Secretary F. Young, Resident Inspector D. Johnson, Resident Inspector OFFICIAL RECORD COPY TMIl WEEKLY STATUS REPORT -
