Proposed Supplement 1 to NRC Bulletin 96-01, " Control Rod Insertion Problems," (62 Federal Register 27629) lubject:

Docket No, to-481:

Control Rod Drop Test Data Gentlemen:

Refesrence 1 request ed licensees to measure and evaluate, at each outage of sufficient duration during calendar year 1996, the control rod drop times and rod recoil data for all control rods.

In Reference 2 tne NRC proposed end-of-cycle testing for control rods in fuel assembly locations having burnups greater than 40,000 MWD /MTU, if the fuel assembly design included Intermediate Flow Mixing (1FM) grids.

Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation perfotaed rod drop testing on October 4,

1997, during a refueling outage, on all rodded assemblies evith burnuo near or greater than 40,000 MWD /MTU, All rods exhibited recoil and none of the rod drop traces indicated any signs of excessive drag.

Rod drop times and associated assembly burnup data for the tested rodded assemblies are provided in the Attachment.

These control rods were drag tested in the spent fuel pool.

The maximum observed drag force in the dashpot region and the thimble tube region are provided in the attachment.

This information is being provided on a voluntary basis, and is not an NRC Bulletin 96-01 required response.

If you have any questions concerning this response, please contact me at (316) 364-8831, extension 4034, or Mr. Richard D.
