lAEA NUCLEAR SAFETY REVIEW 1998 The attached letter from the International Atomic Energy Agency requests U.S. Input for the IAEA Nuclear Safety Review 1998. The Review is an annual publication which describes the present status of reactor, radiation and waste safety in the world. This year the Review will contain a section on significant achievements, developments and issues encountered by individual Member States. NRC is requated to provide a maximum of two pages on issues related to reactor, radiation and waste safety with related illustrations, if applicable, such as photographs, graphics or diagrams. This contribution is due to the IAEA no later than January 2,1998.

Pleas 6 send the NRC contribution for the Nuclear Safety Review to Jodi Lieberman (415-2341) by December 19,1997, for transmittal to the IAEA.

4 The Secretariat of the International Atomic Energy Agency presents its compliments to the Permanent Missions to the Agency in Vienna and has the honour to draw their attention to the Agency's 1998 Nuclear Safety Review which is currently in veparation. Member States are aware that the review is scheduled for submission to the March 1998 Session of the Board ofGovernors.

l The format of the 1998 Review will differ somewhat from previous years, and will comprise four main sections. The first section will provide e review of the major safety related events worldwide during 1997, the second will be an overview of the Agency's activities over the past year in nuclear, radiation and waste safety, the third will focus on safety developments in individual

Member States and the fourth will offer a tentative look forward into 1998 and beyond. For the third section, the Secretariat is - as in previous years - relying on Member States to provide information on the past year's significant achievements, developmWs and issues related to nuclear, radiation and waste safety, such as enactment or revision of safety nelated inws or regulations. In order to give a balanced presentation eacli Member State is requested to provide input (maximum of two pages) with related illustratio ns, such as photographs, graphics or diagrams, to the Secretariat.

To assist the Secretariat in the timely preparation of the Review, a prompt reply would be appreciated.

It should reach the Agency's responsible oflicer, Mr. Ian Barraclough, of the Department of Nuclear Safety, Safety Co-ordination Section, no later than 2 January,1998.

The Seuctariat of the International Atomic Energy avails itself of this opportunity to renew to the Permanent Missiens in Vienna the assurances ofits highest consideration.
