l Supplementary information: The NRC's Omce of State Programs (OSP) is providing this information to the Agreement States (AS) to increase their awareness of the Year 2000 (Y2K) -

problem in computer systems. Nationwide efforts are being undertaken to assure that -

computer systems will recognize a correct date of January 1,2000 and beyond. The problem results from computer hardware 'or software using a two-digit field to represent t_he year. If the problem is not corrected, computer systems will potentially fail to recognize the change to the new century and will misread "00" or the year 2000, as 1900! Consequently, there is a risk l

that affected systems will fail to function properly. The Y2K problem is urgent because it nas

. an unmovable deadline, January 1,2000, and, therefore, it requires evervone's attention.

For. materials licensees, the scope of the Y2K potential proem involves material control and

. avoid and prevent potential problems, NRC materials licensees are being encouraged to -

~

examine their use of computer syttoms and software well before the end of the century.- NRC
recommends that Agreement States Radiation Control Programs encourage their licensees to conduct similar examinations.
