SUBJECT:
NRC RADIATION PROTECTION INSPECTION REPORTS 50 254/97025(DRS);
50 26G/97025(DRS)
Dear Mr. Pearce:
On November 7,1997, the NRC completed an inspection of the radiation protection program at
your Quad Cities Nuclear Power Station. The results of this inspection were discussed on that
date with you and other members of your staff. The enclosed report presents the results of that
inspection.
The purpose of the inspection was to review the implementation of the respiratory protection
program, the 1997 station radiation dose, source term reduction efforts, and sevt'ral previous
inspection items, in addition the inspection included a review of doses received from
performing the Unit 2 Class 1 Pressure Test at power,
The respiratory protection and source term reduction programs were effectively implemented.
The actual 1997 station radiation dose was well below the projected dose due to innovative
scaffolding arrangements, reduced size of work crews, and the lack of significant emergent
work during outages Q2R14 and Q2P01. Our review of several radiological protection open
items indicated that effective corrective actions have been implemented. However, we noted
that problems in the planning and conduct of the Class 1 Pressure Test resulted in unnecessary
personnel exposure.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.700 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice,' a copy of this letter and its
enclosures will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room (PDR).
