SUBJECT:

OPEN ITEM ASSOCIATED WITH THE AP600 SAFETY EVALUATION REPORT (SER) ON THE VALIDATION OF WCOBRA/ TRAC FOR LONG TERM COOLING ANALYSES

Dear Mr. Liparulo:

The Reactor Systems Branch of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has provided an SER input to the Standardization Project Directorate on the validation of the WCOBRA/ TRAC computer code for long term cooling analyses of the AP600 following loss-of-coolant accidents.

The SER will be included as part of Final Safety Evaluation Report (FSER) Chapter 21. The input has an open item on application restrictions which has been extracted anc' designated as an FSER open item in the enclosure to this letter, if you have any questions regarding this matter, you may contact me at (301) 4151141.

SER OPEN ITEM ON RESTRICTIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE APPLICATION OF WCOBRA/ TRAC TO AP600 LONG TERM COOLING ANALYSES 440,762F The following application restrictions on using WCOBRATTRAC for AP600 long term cooling analyses should be clearly documented in both WCAP-14776, %' COBRA / TRAC, OSU Long.

Term Cooiing Final Validation Report," and the AP600 SSAR.

1.

The nodalization of the AP600 LTC model should be as close as possible.o that used in the OSU calculations for all future anak ses. The applicant should fully explain and justify

/

all depaitures from ths nodalization scheme used in the OSU cJculation*

2.

The time span und for any window analyses should result into a quasi-steady state solution.

3.

The WCOBRA/ TRAC cooe should not be applied outside of the corresponding parameter range from the OSU experiments. In particular, WCOBRA/ TRAC has not been validated for core dryout and heatup phenomena during LTC.
