Frank J. Miraglia, Actipg Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation United States Nuclear hgulatory Commission Washington, D C. 20555-0001 RE:
Re,uest For A 0 Day Extension Of The 25 Day Comment Period That Commenced O Febmary 11,1998, Regarding The Director's Decision To Deny A Petition Of e Prairie Island Coalition, Under 10 CFR 2.206, Requesting The NRC To Take pecified Actions Related To Northern States Power Company's Prairie Island Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation Docket Nos. SC-282,50-306, and 72-10 DD-98-02
Dear Acting Director Miraglia:
On bahalf of the Prairie Island Coalition (PIC) and the Nuclear Information and Resource Service (NIR'S), we hereby request a 10 day extension of the 25 day comment period in the above captioned matter. Simple fairness requires such an extension.
The 25 day Co ent Period began on February 11,1998, when your decision in this matter was signed d the text of DD-98-02 was filed with the Office of the Federal Register for publicatio The copy of this decision sent to PIC, however, was not even postmarked until Februan 17,1998, and PIC did not receive it until today, February 70.
The mies allow for the Commission to institute a review of this decisior., and provide a 25 day periog for interested parties to provide comments to help inform the Commission's decisiog regardirg the appropriateness ofinstituting a review, When almost 40% of this already short comment period expires before the moving party, PIC, even sees the decision,'the public is denied a fair chance to provide those comments, and the Commission is depived of the insight and wisdom, contemplated by the rules, that such comments would provide.
Please extend e comment period in this matter 10 days. Thank you.
Sincerely, V/
