This is in response to a concem you referenced in your letter dated September 26,1907, and which we discussed in our July 30,1997 meeting in your letter, you indicated that residents living near Advanced M6 dical Systems, Inc. (AMS) are attributing leaming disabilities and incidents of cancer due to radiological releases from the AMS facility. You further requested NRC's assistance in addressing this concem.
hsed on our inspections at the AMS facility, we are unaware of any current or past radiological condiUons at the AMS facility that resulted in any exposures to the public that exceeded our regulatory limits. Had we believed that conditions or activities at the AMS facility posed an undue risk to public healfb and safety, we would have required prompt remedial action, including shutdown,if n:ce'isary.
The NRC does not geneially perforrn public health assessments of the type alluded to in your letter. However, we understand that public health assessments conceming hazardous materials are performed by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services We have discussed your concem with Mr. Ber1 Cooper, Chief of the Energy Section, and Mr. Michael Brooks, Certified Health Physicist, both of ATSDR's Division of Health Assessment and Consultation. They expressed interest i,1 speaking with the City regarding its concern, in addition, they indicated that they would require data from the City such as area cancer rates, and radiological exposure and contamination levels extemal to the AMS facility in order to perform such an assessment. Some of this information -
conceming radiological exposere and contamination levels may be obtained from the inspection reports we sent to you with our November 6,1997 letter, as well as thn fodhcoming report from the inspection at AMS which was performed on December 310,1997. The ATSDR contact person is Mr. Robert Williams, Division Director, who may be reached at 404-639-0610.
We hope that ATSDR is able to assist you in resolving your concems, if we can be of furthet assistance, please contact Mr. John Madera of my staff at 630-829 9834.
