SUBJECT:
REQUEST FOR SCHEDULE FOR COMPLETION OF REMEDIATION ACTMTIES AT THE METCOA SITE IN PULASKI, PENNSYLVANIA
Dear Mr. Wein:
As you are aware, the NRC has completed its review of the proposal to ship waste from the METCOA site in Pulaski, Pennsylvania, to facilities operated by Waste Control Specialists (WCS) in Andrews County, Texas, and concluded, in this case, that no specific NRC approval 4
was required for transfer. - Since resolution of this issue was an important step in the plans for disposal of the remaining wastes at this site, we are requesting a schedule for final remediation and removal of the remaining thorium contamination at the site and submission of a final radiological status survey for NRC review.
- In developing your schedule, please consider that following the removal of the remaining pile of waste at the site, NRC and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania staffs will perform confirmatory radiological measurements for residual contamination in those areas that have not been adequately surveyed at this time. These locations primarily include the area beneath the large j
pile of waste and adjacent areas that could not be surveyed because of the elevated radiation 9
levels from the waste pile. Also, NRC staff has not completed confirmatory measurements within the building. We are requesting that you submit your schedule within thirty (30) days of the date of this letter so that we can schedule staff resources and coordinate activities with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Should you have any questions concerning this matter, please contact Mark Roberts of my staff at (610) 337-5094.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Sincerely, onald R. Bellamy, Chief Decommissioning and Laboratory Branch Division of Nuclear Materials Safety 9902100023 990120 PDR MISC 9902100023 PDR
