Docket No. 70-7001 Bi-Enthly Update on Progress of the CAAS Audibility Upgrade Project

Dear Mr. Pierson:

In accordance with the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC) request of December

.17,' 1998 (Reference 1), this letter provides the bi-monthly update on the progress of the modifications to upgrade the audibility of the criticality accident alarm system (CAAS).

The de. sign for the new CAAS horn system was certified for construction on November 23,1998.

A pre-bid walkthrough with prospective constructors was conducted on January 5,1999, and construction bids are due to the United States Enrichment Corporation (USEC) by the end of January. In addition, procurement for major system components is well underway. The booster air compressors have been delivered and the air accumulator tanks, hom relay cabinets and air solenoid panels are being fabricated. The portable air compressor has also been ordered.

Once the construction contract has been awarded, the actual construction sequence will be established and an overall project milestone schedule should be available for inclusion in the next

' bi-monthly report. Work on the proposed TSR changes for the new system is nearing completion and the certificate amendment request for those changes will be submitted by February 26,1999,-in accordance with USEC's commitment contained in the previous request to change the completion
