' primarily in the academic mission of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, for the instruction of students, and in occasional scholarly research.

' Nuclear Engineering Program, retired from WPI in December 1997. The new nuclear engineering program director will replace the former director as member of the Committee.> A professor from -

f the Chemi stry and Biochemistry Departir. it resigned as of April 1997. Another professor from

that department has volunteered 'to ser,c on the committee. The number of members on the

111l Unscheduled Shutdowns -

There were four unscheduled shutdownr during 1997. Of these, two were due to inadvertent disturbance of signal cables above the reactor while the reactor was operatir g. The Lt wo others were due to movement of the neutron source too close to power mearuring detectors ~!

' during low power operations. None of the scrams had any safety significance given the sccpe of the facility and all were related to activities involving its teaching and training mission.

IV, _ Maintenance No corrective maintenance was performed on safety related systems or components during l V. - Channes. Tests; and Experiments Pursuant to 10Cl R 50.59 There have been no changes to facility design, or new test and experiments, requiring evaluations pursuant to 10CFR 50.59.

VI. '..EmEoactive Effluents Release There have been no measurable releases of radioactivity above background for liquid 1 effluent releases. Gaseous Ar-41 has been released in trace amounts that are conservatively calculated to be well within 10CFR 20 release limits.
