Calibrator DESCRIPTION:

The Model 1000 Unit is designed to provide a self-contained, variable intensity beam of radiation for the calibration of radiation detection instruments.

The unit t,nsists basically of three parts: 1) a shielded compartment or safe for enclosing the instruments to be calibrated, 2) a source shield and beaming device which contains two source drawers, and 3) a castered platform which supports the instrument compartment and source shield.

The device measures 39" (99 cm) in width, 42" (106.7 cm) in length, and approximately 63" (160 cm) in height.

It weighs approximately 3500 pounds (1588 kg).

The instrument compartment or safe is constructed of 4" (10.2 cm) of lead shielding at the top and 2" (5.1 cm) on all outer sides.

The front of the device is equipped with a hinged door which provides access for insertion of the instruments.

A 4" (10.2 cm) lead glass window located on the hinged door permits viewing of the instruments during calibration.

The r:afe has five penetrations: a4" (10.2 cm) hole in the base which aligns the source shield collimator; two 1" (2.54 cm) holes in the left side at 3" (7.6 cm) and 17" (43.2 cm), respectively, above the base for insertion of detector probes; a 1" (2.54 cm) hole in the right side at 0.5" (1.3 cm) above the base for access of flexible mechanical cables for calibration adjustments; and a 0.25" (0.64 cm) penetration for a 110 volt lamp cord.

The two holes in the left side, when not in usc, are closed with solid steel plugs and secured with a common padlock.

The source shield is c lead filled, carbon steel container that is 0.5" (1.3 cm) in diameter by 24.625" (62.55 cm) in length.

The manufacturer states that the source shield will pass DOT Specification 55 requirements.

It has two horizontal cavities which house the source drawers.

Both drawers move perpendicularly across the axis of the radiation beam collimator, thus allowing a varying gamma field.

The outer diameter of the source drawers are 0.688" (1.75 cm) and hold Industrial Reactor Laboratories Series 2 sources.

The upper drawer contains sources g

of 0.385 mci (14.25 MBq), 10 mci (370 MBq), 385 mci (14.25 GBq),

and 15 Ci (555 GBq), respectively.

The lower drawer contains sources of 3.7 mci (136.9 MBq),

185 (6.85 GBq) mci, 3.7 Ci (136.9 GBq), and 225 Ci (8.33 TBq),

respectively.

The source shield has an 8.5" (21.6 cm) in diameter and 2.5" (6.35 cm) thick auxiliary shield at the end through which stainless steel push rods travel for additional shielding when the sources are in the unshielded position.

A back plate is attached which serves to positively stop withdrawal of the source drawer from the collimator.

The instrument compartment door has a lock assembly which mechanically locks this door.

The key is restrained until the door is closed and locked.

The aey may then be released for use with a second lock assembly which mechanically unlocks a bolt holding the two source drawers immobile in the shielded position.

The key is restrained in this mechanism until the drawers are returned to the shielded position and locked.

The positions of the source drawers are indicated by " Safe" and " Exposed" lights on the front panel of the unit which are activated by the lock bolt which is in direct physical contact with two micro switches representing each drawer.

There are lights also on the front panel which indicate which sources of either drawer are in use at any one time.

EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:

A calibrator loaded with 182 Ci (6.73 TBq) of cesium-137 was surveyed by the manufacturer and found to produce surface radiation levels less than 2.5 nr/hr (25 pSv/hr) with the two source drawers in the fully unshielded position, except for the access hole on the right hand side which had an 8 mR/hr (80 pSv/hr) level.

With the source drawer in the shielded position, the maximum surface radiation level detected was 0.5 mR/hr (5 pSv/hr) around the unit.

Calibrator LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATION OF USE:

Instructional procedures were provided with each unit which contains guidelines relating to the operation and radiation safety of the unit.

Instructional procedures described above may had been referenced by the applicant with respect to the operating procedures that were planned to be followed.

SAFETY ANALYSIS

SUMMARY

As of the effective date of this document, the Model 1000 Calibrator is no longer manufactured and distributed by Industrial Reactor Laboratories Inc.

The company has been out of business since 1991.

This device was approved for licensing purposes by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) on August 26, 1972.

There is insufficient information on file for this device to perform a safety evaluatian.

Therefore, this certificate is being reinsued without further~ review based on the original review and approval issued by AEC.
