SUBJECT:
SUMMARY
OF RADS PROTOTYPE MODEL DEMONSTRATION j
On Wednesday January 13,1999, Ken Russell and Carol Hoffman, INEEL, gave two demonstrations of the prototype model of the NRC Reliability and Availability Data System (RADS) to the NRC RADS Coordinatien Group and other interested NRC staff. The RADS system will contain the data that indestry is providing to INPO's EPIX and SSPI systems, along with reliability and availability data from other sources such as LERs. RADS will have the capability to compute generic and plant-specific estimates of reliability for use in risk-informed
)
applications. The purpose of the demonstration was to give future users "the look and feel" of the system and to solicit comments on the proposed interfaces and capabilities of the system.
A list of the attendees at the two sessions is in Attachment A.
During the sessions, users made the following comments on the interfaces and the systems options and capabilities:
e Project Dialogue Box o
Add a field to allow the user to give a narrative description of the project, i.e., the data and analyses to be performed i
o Additional data sources should be added - SSPl, Monthly Operating Reports, etc.
o Allow the user to select a combination of data sources as opposed to a single j
data source e
Search Criteria o
Unit Add attributes (submenu selection criteria) available from UNITINFO o

Failure Data
- The option to select more than one failure made for an analysis should be available Failure mode will be an attribute of the failure record and not a drop down menu selection at the top of the scr6en User selection of failure records to compute a stand-by failure rate should be available o
Demands User selection of the type of demand such as EPIX test and non-test 8
i demands, EPIX estimated demands, SSPI demands, actual / spurious tests, and cyclic tests that would be used in the search Analysis Menu Add an " Update Analysis" option to allo'n the user to update the analysis when o
new demands and failures are available. The system would notify the user when new data are available for updating a previous analysis Add a sensitivity analysis option to allow users to analyze the impact of using o
different failures or demands Add a field to allow the user to describe a distribution that is being added to the o
distribution bank Store the results of the AEOD systems studies in the system to allow for their o
use as prior distributions e

Help documentation should include The definitions used in EPIX The statistical formula for the calculations Information about search rJle selection Criteria INEEL will make the changes to the RADS software and database schema as suggested in the above feedback. The use of additional unit attributes and the option to select failures for computing a stand-by failure rate are under consideration.
INEEL will next develop the critical system design. Based on comments on the critical system design, INEEL will develop and test the system and provide a demonstration of the implemented system at NRC in August 1999. At the same time, INEEL will set up and provide l

-I guidance to NRC staff in beta testing the system. Any personnel who may be involved in using RADS for risk-informed applications should plan to attend the demonstration and, if possible, serve as beta testers. The specific time and location of the demo will be promulgated by E-mail to the RADS Coordination Group and managers of units likely to benefit from using RADS.
