Chairman Rowden and Commissioner Mason discussed the key issues asso-1 y/d ciated with the regulation of nuclear medicine and informed the staff

that further information would be required before Commission guidance on these issues could be provided.

F r (1) Within this context, the Commissioners approved in principle the

proposed plan to conduct a public meeting with the NRC's Advisory il L Committee on the Medical Uses of Isotopes (to include participation

by individual licensees, and state and other Federal Agencies, as g1 appropriate) to determine the views of these groups with respect to C l the issues.

J. l (2) Prior to such meetings, the Commissioners requested that they be I

provided with further information concerning the matrix of issues f:

l to be discussed at the meeting, including staff formulations of g

what issues will affect policy determinations, what objectives need si to be accomplished in regulating nuclear medicine, what mechanisms S ?

v should be developed'for accomplishing those objectives, and some 2

preliminary evaluation of an appropriate role for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in the regulation process.

Based on these considerations, a proposed agenda for tha public meeting should be developed and be provided to the Commission for approval in advance of the meeting.
