Subject:

Byron Station Unit 2 Braidwood Station Unit 1 --

Confirmation of Design Adeqyacy for '

Jet Impingement Effects .

NRC Docket-Nos. 50-455 and 50-456

Reference:

August 29, 1985 li.N. Thompson, Jr. Letter to Cordell Reed, .

Dear Mr. Denton:

. Enclosed are the Byron U' nit 2 and Braidwood Unit 1

" Confirmation of Design Adequacy for Jet Impingement Effects" reports for your review. This information is b'eing.provided to close out the issue of high energy line' breaks and supporting" analyses as men, tioned in the, referenced letter for Byron Unit 2 and Braidwoo'd. Unit 1.

The reports ha*ve been prepared as an overview and summary to document the completion of the revi'dit and to point out the ~

s1,gnificant differences between the Byron Unit 1 analysi's and both the Byron Unit 2 analysis and Braidwood Unit 1 analysis. The reports indicate that there are no s'ign.ificant differences between the, equipment required for safe shutdown betweiih the units.

,' The. conclusion reached by this svaluation is that Byron Unit 2 and Braidwood Unit 1 can safely shutdown after a high energy line break considering the. combined effects,of jet impingement and other effects of'the break and a limiting single failure. The common design basis utilized for Byron Unit 1 and both Byron Unit 2 and Braidwood Unit 1 ha's resulted in relatively few differences between the high energy line break effects on'the units.
