Attention: Dr. C. Vernon Hodge -

. Gentlemen:

i On January 26.1998, Dr. Hodge, Kamalaka Naidu et al. (NRC). had a telephone conversation with Dr. Suheil Z. Haddad, Electrical Analytical Division Manager; J. Scott Steele, Electrical -

Project Engineering Manager; David A. Schroeder, Senior Electrical Project Engineer, and myself about Sargent & Lundy Standard ESA 102. -The conversation was prompted by ine Clirdon Station Licensee Event Report 97 034-00 and 10 CFR 21 Report (combined) dated

January 16,1998, titled " incorrect Cable Resistance and Brake HGre;-xr Data Used in the Deel n of Division 1 and 2 Emergency Diesel Generator Vent Fan Results in Design of Fan -

l Motors Being Outside the Demon Basis of the Plant.'

In the above conversation I agrood to send Dr. Hod 0e copies of ESA 102 dated 04-14-93

-(current revision), and " Evaluation of the impact of Using STD-ESA-102 Cable Impedance -

- Values in Design Calculations' dated 11 21 97. These documents are enclos9d The evaluation -

concludes that the conservatism in the calculations is more than adequate to ensure the -

. adequacy of system design and equipment operation in all cases including marginal cases. This is the basis for our conclusion that the use of the incorrect impedance values will nct create a -

substantial safety hazard or cause a safety limit to be exceeded. Also enclosed is

  • Evaluation of
STD-ESA-102 Usage in Clinton Power Station Voltage Drop Calculations" dated 12-18-97 (minus attachments since they are voluminous), which shows S&L's perspective on the cable / fan.
