2 7 JUN 1986 MEMORANDUM FOR:

Everett Wick Waste Management / Engineering Branch Division of Waste Management, NMSS FROM:

Michael McNeil Waste Management Branch Division of Radiation Risk Assessment &

Management Branch, RES

SUBJECT:

The Following BWIP SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS:

1.

SD-BWI-TS-008 " Slow-Strain-Rate Testing of 9%Cr, 1*.Mo Wrought Steel and ASTM A27 Cast Steel in Hanford Grande Rande Groundwater."

2.

SD-BWI-TS-014 " Pitting Behavior of Low Carbon Steel."

3.

SD-BWI-TS-012 "Short-Term Stress-Corrosion - Cracking Tests for A36 and A387-9 Steels in Simulated Harford Groundwater."

The reports listed above are all cited in the BWIP EA and have been unavailable to us or our contractors until recently.

I would like to suggest that each should be reviewed by NMSS' NBS TA contractor and that any staff or contractors involved in an Appendix 7 visit to review the corrosion work being conducted for BWIP by DOE should familiarize themselves with these reports. Of particular interest is the discussion of linear elastic' fracture mechanics (LEFM) in the third report and references in the discussion to a recent NAS report (reference number 2 in the report).

It would be interesting to know why 7

PDR

.e the NAS report favors LEFM over plastic approaches. Three copies of the first report, four of the second, and one of the third, are attached.
