Dear Dr. Fitzgerald:

I am responding to your December 1,1997, letter about the training and experience of phyt,1 clans who oversee and administer radiation therapy. As you are aware, the issue of radiation safety training and experience for all personnel using radionuclides in medicine is one of the major cross-cutting issues being reviewed as part of the overall revision of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's regulations governing the medical uses of byproduct material. Your comments on the importance of the standards and criteria for licensure and l

for certification by The American Board of Radiology will be considered during the rulemaking process.

We have been actively so'iciting input from the medical community on this issue, so we appreciate your comments. If you have any questions or further input on the proposed revision of 10 CFR Part 35, please call Ms. Cathy Haney, Chairperson of the Part 35 Working Group, at 301 415-6825.
