Vogtle Electric Generating Plant - Units 1 & 2; 50-424, 50-425; She red Pinion Keys in Limitorque Motor Operators Letter GN-194 dated September 29, 1982 Letter GN-205 dated December 22, 1982 Letter GN-209 dated January 24, 1983 Letter GN-221 dated March 22, 1983 Letter GN-228 dated May 16, 1983 Letter GN-233 dated June 1, 1963 Attention:
Mr. J. Nelson Grace:
On August 4,
1982, the USNRC was notified by Westinghouse Electric Corporation via telephone that six sheared pinion keys had been discovered in Limitorque Model SB-0-25 motor operators.
This was confirmed in Westinghcuse letter NS-EPR-2637, dated August 6, 1982.
Additionally, I &E Information Notice 81-08 informed utilities that failures of sheared pinion keys had been experienced in Limitorque Model SMB-4 motor operators.
Georgia Power Company notified the NRC of a reportable condition in our letter GN-233, dated June 1,1983, even though the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant did not use either the Model SMB-4 or th.e Model SB-0-25 motor operators.
Westinghouse did recommend the replacement of pinion '
keys in the Model SMB-0-15 motor operators and Georgia Power Company committed to replace these keys in our June 1,1983, letter.
Georgia Power Company also committed to replace pinion keys in Limitorque motor operator Models SB-0, SB-00, SMB-0, and SMB-00 in addition to the Model SMB-0-15.

Sheared Pinion Keys in Limitorque Motor Operators File: X7BG03-M30 Log:
GN-933 June 11, 1986 Page two Several years have elapsed since this condition was originally reported to the NRC. Westinghouse Electric Corporation and Limitorque Corporation have advised Georgia Power Company that, to this date, failed pinion keys have only been detected in Model SB-0-25 and SMB-4 motor operators.
These operators are not used at the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant.
Georgia Power Company is now of the opinion that the failure of pinion keys in Limitorque motor operators is restricted to the above referenced model numbers.
Additionally, Georgia Power Company has replaced the pinion keys in Unit 1 for the Model SMB-0-15 motor operators supplied by Westinghouse referenced in our letter ' GN-233 dated June 1,
1983.
Pinion keys will also be replaced in the related SMB-0-15 motor operators in Unit 2.
These actions, in conjunction with the inspection of pinion keys during the normal inservice inspection and maintenance programs should preclude this condition from occuring at the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant.
Based on this recent review and the committed actions described above, Georgia Power Company does not intend to replace pinion keys for any motor operators other than the Model SMB-0-15 supplied by Westinghouse.
This letter contains no proprietary information and may be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
