SUBJECT:
THERMO-LAG RELATED AMPACITY DERATING ISSUES FOR SOUTH TEXAS PROJECT, UNITS 1 AND 2 (STP) (TAC NOS. MA3390 AND MA3391)
Dear Mr. Cottle:
By letter dated July 7,1997, you submitted a response to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC's) May 9,1997, Request for Additional Information related to Generic Letter 92-08, "Thermo-Lag 330-1 Fire Barriers," for STP, specifically in the area of ampacity derating. The NRC staff, in conjunction with its contractor, Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), has completed its review of your analytical approach for ampacity derating determinations. The results of the review are documented in the enclosed Safety Evaluation (Enclosure 1) and SNL Technical Letter Report, "A Supplemental Technical Evaluation of the South Texas Project Analysis of Cable Ampacity Limits," dated November 6,1997 (Enclosure 2).
Based on its review, the staff concludes that there are no significant safety hazards associated with the application of your ampacity derating methodology for STP.
Sincerely, ORIGINAL SIGNED BY:
