November 19, 1997 Mr. Burl W. Nethercutt Radiation Safety Officer American Alriines Maintenance & Engineering Center P.O. Box 582809 Tulsa, OK 74158 2809
Dear Mr. Nethercutt:
This letter is in response to your application dated May 23,1996, requesting custom reglstration of the Model 527 Collimator and the DT&E 2355 Rigid Guide. We are in the process of evaluating your request. However, in order to continue our review, the following information is necessary:
Model 527 Collimator in order for the American Airlines Model 527 Collimator to be reghtered as a custom device for American Airlines, separate from the Amersham collimators, it is necessary that you submit information as it pertains spsicifically to American Altlines and the Model 527 Collimator, if you Intend to use the Amersham milimators registered under NR 0628 A 136 S, and no longer wish to register the American Aldines Model 527 Collimator, please notify us immediately.
1, Indicate the expected usefullife of the collimator.
2.
Please indicate how the collimator will be labeled to uniquely identify it as being the component for which the custom review wris performed.
Provide a description of the likely environments (i.e., temperature, pressure, vibration, 3.
humidity, impact), and conditions of use of the collimator.
l 4.
Please provide the following regarding the construction of the collimator:
a, the minimum wall thickness and the minimum Inner diameter of the guide tube within the collimator.
b.
how the inside tube is attached to the collimator how the collimator end cap is attached to the main collimator body, l' addition c.
n please assure that the collimator end cap will not interfere with the end stop itself, or with the attachment of end stop to the collimator.
. d.
the materials of construction for all components.

Please provide details regarding the QA/QC program that the collimators will be subjected to before use.. This program should ensure that tha collimators are manufactured according to the information submitted in support of your application. One acceptable program would include a check of incoming components to ensure that they meet specifications, and final check (such as a pull test) to test connections, t

,. Regarding the requirements of the tensile test,in accordance with Section 8.7 of ANSI <
4 N432-1PB0, p'sase indicate where and how the load was applied; the acceptance criteria for the test; and a discussion of the results of the test. In addition, your t
application indicates that the tensile test was performed using a load of 500 N for 30 l 1'
seconds. Please note that since the regulations and guidance regarding the tensile test for guide tubes does not clearly indicate whether the test should be performed using the
+
500 N/30 second load or the 1000 N/10 second load, the staff position in this matter is-that the 500 N/30 second load is intended to test the driving mechanism under a load, while the 1000 N!.0 second load is intended to test the tensile strength of the materials

and connections. Therefore, it is the staffs position that, in the case of guide tubes, the applicable test is the 1000 N/10 second load.
7.
Please provide details regarding the QA/QC program that the guide tubes will be subjected to before use. This program should ensure that the guide tubes are e
manufactured according to the inf s mation submitted in support of your application.
Pleate provide the information requested above within thirty (30) days of the date of this letter, if you have any questions, please contact me at (301) 415-5868 or Mr. Steven Baggett at (301)415-7273.
Sincerely, lb Michele L. Burgess, Mechanical Engineer Sealed Source Safety Section Medical, Academic, and Commercial Use Safety Branch Division of Industrial and Medical Nuclear Safety Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards
