SUMMARY

OF PUBLIC MEETING HELD ON JANUARY 6,1998, WITH THE NUCLEAR INDUSTRY ASSESSMENT COMMITTEE (NIAC) TO DISCUSS NIAC'S AUDITING PROCESS On January 6,1998, the staff held a public meeting at NRC headquarters in Rockville, Maryland with representatives of the Nuclear Industry Assessment Committee (NIAC). The purpose of the meeting was to exchange information conceming the NIAC audit process. A list of atte.1 dees and their affiliations is provided in Attachment 1.

NIAC provided a dis ussion of its p-1se and membership requirements, an overview of its audit process, governing documents and administration, an explanotion of its auditing process including how members are qualified for auditing services, and how its members comply w;th the requirements of 10 CFR Part 21. The slides used in the NIAC presentation are provided as l.

l During the NIAC presentation, the staff questioned certain NIAC practices and it was agreed that applicable NIAC documents would be revised to provide additional clarification of NIAC's e mpliance to Appendix 8 to 10 CFR Part 50 and 10 CFR Part 21 in the following areas.

Reference to NOA-1 in NIAC documents will be reviewed and modified to indicate that only editions and addenda of NQA-1 endorsed by the NRC are acceptable for use during the performance of NIAC auditing activities.

The NIAC Charter will be revised to clarify that the requirements of 10 CFR Part 21 apply to certain NIAC audit activities.

Purpose
