212 OF 1986 REQUESTING THE BON. MARIO N. CUONO, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEN YORE, TO ASSUME LEADERSHIP ROLE -
SHUTDONE OF INDIAN POINT NUCLEAR POWER PLANT -
RECONSIDERATION OF NUCLEAR POWER AS ENERGY SOURCE Reisman / Cornell WHEREAS, the Legislature of Rockland County, heretofore, by Resolution No. 302 of 1983, requested the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to immediately and independently shut down the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant, and WHEREAS, the Legislature of Rockland County, by Resolution No. 389 of 1983, reaffirmed its intent that the Indian Point Power Plant cease operation until such time as the Rockland County Legislature approved a Radiological Evacuation Plan, and
- WHEREAS, the Legislature of Rockland County, on numerous occasions, has questioned the wisdom of operating the Indian Point nuclear reactors in the New York Metropolitan Area and has j
further questioned the viability of aay evacuation plan, and i
WHEREAS, the Soviet ' Union, at its chernobyl nuclear plant, is now experiencing the world's worst nuclear disaster, and
- WHEREAS, any nuclear
- reactor, such as the Indian Point reactor and the Chernobyl reactor, poces an imminent danger to the general populous, and
- WHEREAS, the nuclear catastrophe in the Soviet Union underscores the tremendous health hazard posed by the nuclear
- industry, as well as the potential loss of human lives and possible annihilation of mankind, and WHEREAS, the nuclear catastrophe in the Soviet Union is such a potential health hazard that public authorities in the State of New York, as well as countries around the world, are testing for radiation. f allout to protect their citizens and food supplies from contamination, and (continued on reverse side)

v Am Amtnd9d Raforral No.,6675C" May 6, 1986 WHEREAS, it would be in the best interests of the citizens of Rockland County if the Indian Point nuclear reactors were shut down so that they would no longer pose a danger to the lives and safety of the inhabitants of the New York Metropolitan Area, and WHEREAS, the Hon. Mario M.
Cuomo, as Governor of the State of New York, should assume his leadership role on behalf of all the citizens of the State of New York in causing the shutdown of the Indian Point nuclear reactors operated by the New York Power Authority and Con Edison, as well as calling for a complete review of the nuclear power industry in the United States, and
- WHEREAS, the Multi-Services Committee of this Legislature has met, considered and unanimously a p p r o v e d ' t h i's resolution, now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, that the Legislature of Rockland County requests

the Hon. Mario M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of New York, to assume his leadership role on behalf of all the citizens of the State of New York, and to use all his articulate powers of persuasion to bring about a total shutdown of the Indian Point nuclear power reactors operated by the New York Power Authority and Con Edison, and be it further
- RESOLVED, that the Legislature of Rockland County further requests the Hon. Mario M.
Cuomo to oppose, before the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, any change in the existing licensing requirements which would permit the extension of the useful life of nuclear power plants and particularly the Indian Point nuclear reactors, and be it further RESOLVED, that the Legislature of Rockland County requests the Hon. Mario M. Cuomo to oppose the issuance of new operating licenses to any non-operating nuclear power plants within or without the State of New York, and be it further
- RESOLVED, that the Legislature of Rockland County further requests that the Hon. Mario M.
Cuomo, Governor of the Empire State with national
- stature, call for international reconsideration of the wisdom of nuclear
- power, and be it further RESOLVED, that the Clerk to the Legislature be and is hereby authorized and directed to send a
certified copy of this resolution to the Hon. Mario M.
Cuomo, Governor of the State of New York; Hon. Eugene Levy, New York State Senator; Hon. Sam
- Colman, Hon.
Robert Connor and Hon.
George Pataki, New York e
State Assemblymen and Hon. Mary Margaret McPhillips, New York State Assemblywoman; the Majority and Minority Leaders of the New York State Senate and Assembly; the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and to such other persons as the Clerk, in her discretion, may feel proper in order to effectuate the purpose of this resolution.
