The NRC staff has evaluated the information provided in your June 2.1997.
t,ubmittal reltted to the inservice inspection )rogram relief requests NDE-35 and NDE-3/. 'In your letter, you have stated tlat the North Anna Power
'i Station. Unit 1 and Unit 2. are presently in the second 10-year inservice
-inspection interval and the examinations are conducted to the requirements of the 1983 Edition. Summer 1983 Addenda and 1986 Edition of ASME Section XI.
respectively.
The Code requirements for the Code editions referenced above require a surface examination of the reactor vessel closure head nuts.
However the 1989 Addenda of ASME Section XI has changed the requirement from a surface examination to a visual (VT-1) examination.
Relief was requested from performing a Code rcquired surface examination of the reactor vessel closure head nuts.
Based on the evaluation af the relief requests, it is concluded that the proposed alternative to perform a visual examination of th'
.ctor vessel closure head nuts in lieu of a surface examination provides an acceptable level of quality and safety. Therefore, pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a'a)(3)(1).
the staff authorizes the proposed alternatives in Relief Requests NDE-35 and NDE-37. The staff's evaluation and conclusions are cont iined in the Enclosure.
The staff.has completed its evaluation of this matter and we are, therefore.
closing out TAC Nos. M98956 and M98957.
