. = _ i i t REGISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF DEVICE HQL NR-8085-D-802*S DATE - JAN 2 61998 PAGE 2 OF 3-DEVICE TYPEt ' Electric Power Supply i DESCRIPTIONt The MW-3000 thermoelectric generator weighs about 2700'lbs (1226 kg). The external wrought steel shield is cylindrical. The shield is 23" (58.4 cm) in height and 24" (61.0 cm) in diameter. A flat steel cover plate is bolted to the top of the generator to protect the fittings on the penetration tubes 7 emanating from the, generator's internal components. Lifting and tie-down devices are an integral part of the outer wrought steel shield. -At the core of the generator is--the Hastelloy-C fuel capsule containing the radioactive strontium titanate heat source (170 watts).- A wolfram shield block is positioned above the top of the fuel capsule, whereas the remaining space between the outer steel shield and fuel capsule contains Min-K, a resilient-insulating material._ Above the-wolfram-shield block is the thermoelectric module which is held in place by an aluminum cover plate that is bolted to the outer steel shield. The-temperature differential across the module induces the electrical power (3 watts) which;is brought out through seals in the aluminum cover plate. The only othm. penetration in the aluminum cover plate is a tube for out gausing the insulation in the generator and back filling it with an-inert atmosphere. LABELING The MW-3000 generator has two metal plates both of which are bolted onto the surface of the generator. One plate has the inscription "Radiohetive Material'--I.C.C_. Permit No. 4888" and the other plate:is inscribed with " Martin Company, Baltimore, Maryland, Division-of Martin-Marietta Corp.,LLCG MW-3000 weight l 2700 pounds, Part No. 47131000000-009". i l 7 -i
1 REGISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF DEVICE HQ1 NR-8085-D-802-S DATE: jgq 2 6 1993 PAGE 3 OF 3 DEVICE TYPE: Electric Power Supply I LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE: i The device shall only be used by persons specifically licensed by the NRC or an Agreement State. Handling, storage, use, transfer, and disposal: To be determined by the licensing authority. The device shall be leak tested at intervals not to l exceed 6 months using techniques capable of detecting O.005 microcurie (185 Bq) of removable contamination. REVIEWER NOTE: The generator shall not be handled in such a way that its heat dissipating characteristics are inhibited at any time by covering or storing in a non-ventilated area. REVIEWER NOTE: The top steel cover plate shall be bolted to the outer wrought uteel shield at all times xcept when maintenance operations are being performed on the generator. SAFETY ANALYSIS
SUMMARY
As of the effective date of this document, the Model MW-3000 Thermoelectric Generator is no longer manufactured and distributed by Martin Marietta. Martin Marietta no longer exists having become Lockhead Martin. Thic device was originally approved for licensing purposes by the Atomic Ene, y Commission (AEC). There is insufficient information on file for this device to perform a safety evaluation and to determine when it was approved for licensing purposes by the AEC. Therefore, this certificate is being taken to inactive status without further review based on the original review and approval issued by the AEC. This action is being taken to denote product is 1_ active. ISSUING AGENCY: U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission x

o NOTE TO: SSD96-32 SSD97 72 FROM: Eric Compton, Engineering Alde '~ Sealed Source Safety Section DATE: May 30,1997 Background file only contained the registration certificate. Before I had reviewed the case, Chris Brown had requested archival files; 14 boxes came in frcm Oak Ridge. He tried to find a license terminating action with an exact date and to find out how many of these devices were distributed Most of the files were not in order The company had several licensing activities over the years, however most of the files were of no use. Chris had also searched NUDOCS which produced no results by trying to pull up registration cert, model numbers, and combined searches. Martin Marietta merged with the Lockhead Company becoming Lockhead Martin, therefore Martin Marietta no longer exists. Lockhead Martin in Baltimore, Maryland was contacted on May 28,1997 to see if any information existed on these two devices (LCG-25A and MW 3000). Response from Mike Smith of Lockheed Martin indicated that no information is available, but these devices were probably used for powering buoys and remote repeater stations. l Therefore a safety review was not performed. = =. 05 1lgpu D V3 Sfl'

Reviewer notes: Tremaine's bckgroung file only contained the reg. Cert. i i requested the archival files.14 boxes came in from Oak Ridge. My goal was to see ifI could fina a lleense terminating activity with exact date. Find out how many of these devices were distributed. Most of the files were not in order. The company had a lot of activity over the years, hence; most of the fi.es were of no use. 4 Check NUDOCS - The for license related infonnation on device. Tried pulling up registration cert, model numbers, tried combined searches. Company is out of business, therefore not enough information to perform safety review. l1%!e Warei1 ,~ s !.l \\ ^ %me in r>9.
