Dear Mr. Kammerer:
Enclosed are copies of letters that my office received from constituents expressing concern about Fort Saint Vrain Nuclear Power Plant.
These constituents are concerned about the simularities between the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the Fort Saint Vrain Plant.
I would appreciate your comments on this situation so that I can respond to their concerns.
Your assistance in this matter is appreciated.

Dear I am very concerned about the saf ety of the Fort As a Colorado resident, St. Vrain nuclear plant in light of the accident at Chernobyl.
' 7. i.9 I am concerned because:
--l i ke Chernobyl, Ft. St. Vrain is a graphi te reactor
--there is only a single containment vessel at F1. St. Vrain while vessels most nuclear plants in the U.S. have double containneni
--the St. Vrain plant has a history of mal f unctions which raisen serious questions about the design and management of the plant I am aware that tne Nuclear Regulatory Commission uses cost-benefit analysi-ft. S-when making decisions about licensing and operating nuclear plants, it has proved f ar nore Vrain has not produced the electrici1y projected, expensive io operate and maintain than expected and there are serious ques-about the saf ety of the plant.
A serious nuclear accident would not only endanger the poople of a ma, lor farming *-
metropolliian area, but would also contaminate one of the richest in Colorado.
Please bring these concerns to the attention of the fluclear Regulatory Con-I would nir.n appreciate while they are currently investigating St. Vrain.
10 know when adi being informed of your position on this matter, and would lihn where public hearings on this issue will be held.
Thank you very much.
Yours sincerely, M
Sharon Welch Clough

The Honorable Hany Brown U.S.
House of Pepresentativer 1316 Lanyworth Building.
uashington, District c r coluntie pn51;
Dear Pep.. Brown:
The events or the past week has caused me sufficient concern that 3 want to-exprest then to you in the hope that you may be eble to tage remedial ection.
The events tnat concern ne took pl ace near Chernobyl in the Soviet l'n i o n, nearly hal fway around the globe,
.yet hnve had an ef fect on our I tv es here in Colorado.
The meltdown of the g raphite-core reacto r( s) (the on]y graphite-core reactor here in the U.S.
is at Ft. St. Vr ai n), and the subsequent r el e as e of radioactive isotopes into the environment creates o frffhtening scenario.
The c l o ud o f r ad i o ac t 1~v e materia] hat t hr eateited no t enly the punlic healt h of the citizens of the Soviet Union but has extended acresc international bounderles: felt as for away as tierway, France end I t al y.
One of t he most startlin; speculations in recent days concernc -t he impact of t he r adioactiv e isotopes on food pr odve l f or. not. only in If.c Uxraine, but in other countries.
Vith the amount e r starvation and melnourishment in the world, there is 1fttle roow for taking ~ ex panses of produc tiv e ag ricul t ur al I dod s out ~ of. product! ors for a number of years as a resul t of co nc er,tr at ions of strontium and ceciue, wh ic h c on c e n t r a t e i n tb.e food ' chain and havc' hal f.!!ves measured in decades.
19y concern st ems f r om the fact that th!s incident. took pl ac e at
.iust one of er, estimated 375 conmerci al reacters around the world.
The r eac tors were desig ned with Safety and control measures in nind f or presumably benign pur pusos.
There are, in addition, ar. untold number of military reacters desigred f or purposes ran3 ng from the produc tion -of Weapons-grade pl utonium i
to the propul sion of aircraf t c o r r i eri.
Finally, there are the we epons ar sch els, which were designed not fer benig n pur paces but rather to preak mass d est.r uc t ion.
If thi s one ac cident could have such 6 ~ d ramat i c, global impact, the potential di sast.er brought about at a. nuc l ear pl ant in a more popul ated 'ar ca ( such as the Col orado Front cang e) woul d dwar f the present tragedy.
J a d v o c a t e t.h a t. yo u i n t r o d u ce l eg ! r,1 at i on t.o d ec emni s s i o n the commerc ial. nucl ear power production facilities in the U.S.
The risks associat ed wit h this techncicf y icr the production of electrical po wer, a t demonstrated by the chernobyl dicaster, are too great t.o justi f y continued use of nuclear power pl ant s.
Thane you for your att ention.
