January 20, 1998 CHAIRMAN Dr. Graham Wallis

Dear Dr. Wallis:

On behalf of the Commission, I am pleased to offer you an appointment to a four-year term on the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS). The ACRS advises the Commission on the safety of proposed or existing reactor facilities, the adequacy of proposed reactor safety standards, and such other duties as the Commisshn may request.

The Commission offers this appointment based on the understanding that you will not advise the ACRS on any particular matter that would directly and predictably affect 'he financial interests of the entities listed in the recent memorandum to you from the OfDc6 of the General Counsel.

Although we will make an effort to minimize our demands on your time, we recognize that service on the Committee will entail some sacrifices on your part. We appreciate your willingness to give your time and energy to an effort that is so important to the future progress of the Nation's nuclear regulatory program.
