Dear Mr. Denton:
A preservice eddy-current examination of the full-length of the VEGP Unit 1 steam generator tubes has been completed. Examination was accomplished on 100% of the length of all tubes by making entry from both the cold-leg and hot-leg sides. The cold-leg was examined to the upper support. The hot-leg examination included the area around the U-bend to the upper support on the cold leg side. In addition, strip charts were prepared and, from these, an independent review and analysis was accomplished on 100% of the data.
Six tubes had initially been reported as being plugged by Wetinghouse. These tubes were verified as plugged, and no additional tubes were piugged as a result of this preservice examination.
A profilometry examination was accomplished in the region extending from the end of the tube to 2-1/2 inches above the top of the tube-sheet for 100% of the tubes. The tubes which were found to be under-expanded were reexpanded by l
Westinghouse. Reexamination revealed these tubes to be acceptable. No tubes were found to be over-expanded.
In summary, all the tubes in each of the four Unit 1 steam generators were found to be serviceable with the exception of six tubes which were plugged by the manufacturer. The detailed test reports are available at the Vogtle site for your staff's inspection.
