EXAMINATION REPORT 50-395/97-300
Dear Mr. Taylor:
On December 1 - 5. 1997, the NRC administered examinations to employees of
your company who had applied for licenses to operate the Virgil C. Summer
Nuclear Station. At the conclusion of the examination, the examiners
discussed the examination questions and preliminary findings with those
members of your staff identified in the enclosed report. The written
examination was administered December 12, 1997, transmitted to the NRC in
Rockville. MA . the next week, and received December 16, 1997.
Based on our evaluation of the examination process, your training . staff set
p
and maintained a goal of developing a quality examination that would
discriminate a competent operator from a'less than competent one.
Additionally, your staff's efforts in working with the NRC to develcp the
first facility generated pilot-style initial examination administered at your
facility were considered excellent.
However, the NRC identified numerous
deficiencies in the initial written examination submittal which resulted in
delaying its administration.
A Simulation Facility Report is included in this report as Enclosure 2.
A
copy of the written examir.ation questions and answer key, as noted in
Enclosure 3. was retained by members of your training staff at the conclusion
of the examination.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the Commission's regulations, a copy of
this letter and the enclosures will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
