- PARAMETER AND PERMIT LIMIT: Total Iron, 4 ppm daily maximum NONCOMPLIANCE, DATE, AND DURATION: 5.8 ppm Total Iron, 6May86, unknown CAUSE OF NONCOMPLIANCE: Cooling pond makeup and blowdown are sampled simultaneously. On 6May86 the cooling pond makeup (background) contained a total iron concentration of 6.96 ppm while the cooling pond blowdown

contained a total iron concentration of 5.8 ppm. The station believes the high total iron concentration is the result of heavy precipitation.

CORRECTIVE ACTION: On 8May86 Environmental Affairs Department requested that the total iron monitoring requirement and limitation on cooling pond

_ blowdown be deleted and alternatively impose iron limitations on any of the individual process wastestreams discharging to the cooling pond or blowdown line. The station feels this request is necessary due to widely fluctuating iron levels present in the Illinois River and cooling pond which occur from natural causes. It is the station's belief that this noncompliance was caused by factors beyond its control.
