J 4.,

v.

DasidAxelrod,M.D., Chairman Disaster Preparedness Connission JUN 101986 Corning Tower Empire State Plaza Albany, New York 12237

Dear Mr. Axelrod:

We have received your May 19, 1986 letter inviting NRC to participate in the described meeting on June 11, 1986. As we understand from Dr. Stasiuk, of your staff, the principal purpose of this meeting is to gather information on the effects of the Chernobyl accident on emergency planning and preparedness.

As we understand it, for the morning session, there will be individual pre-sentations with a panel discussion in the afternoon.

As separately negotiated, Mr. Robert Bernero, Director, Division of BWR Licensing, will be available to discuss source term issues during the morning session.

Dr. Thomas E. Murley, Regional Administrator, Region I, will be available to participate in the afternoon panel and will be the senior NRC spokesman. We understand that representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency

.will also be participating in the panel discussion regarding their role in

'offsite planning and preparedness.

At this time, insufficient information is available from the Chernobyl accident to provide a basis for the NRC staff to recommend changes in emergency planning and preparedness requirements. The US has been aggressively pursuing various avenues to gather sufficient information to assess the need for changes and if changes are indicated they will be promptly implemented through the regulatory process.

Sincerely, Original Signed By:

James fJ. Tay!at '
