Dear Sirs:

The purpose of this letter is to provide the NRC a summary of the activities at TMI-2 during the

- 4* quarter of 1997.

During the 4* quarter of 1997, GPU Nuclear completed the semi-annual surveillance of the TMI-2 Reactor Building on December 9,1997. No adverse trends of radiological conditions were identified during the inspection. The next inspection of the TMI-2 Reactor Building is scheduled for A.ne 1998.

The Reactor Vessel temperature monitoring system reported the Reactor Vessel temperatures ranged from 50.2 F on December 21 and 22,1997 to 74.6 F on October 1,1997. The Reactor j

Building temperature ranged from 47.3 F on December 31,1997 to 73.8 F on October 1,1997.

Ig The largest temperature difference between the Reactor Building and the Reactor Vessel occurred on December 24,1997, when the Reactor Building temperature was 4.1 F less than the Reactor Vessel temperature.

Page 2 of 2 Significant work activities during the 4* quarter of 1997 included recoveiv from a loss of offsite power, which occurred on November 24,1997. In addition, each end of an underground 3 inch pipe was plugged followi;ig completion of an extensive drying activity, various ventilation system filter changeouts occurred, and repairs were made to the electrical system. Dismantlement of non radiciogical equipment continued with the removal of pumps and other miscellaneous equipment located in the Seiviec Building basement, Control Building Area, and the Turbine lluilding.
