An NRC inspection was conducted September 14 through October 25,1997, at your Fort
"
Calhoun Station reactor facility. The enclosed report presents the scope and resu ts of that
'
inspection.
t
During the 6 week period covered by this inspection, your conduct of activities at the Fort
I
'
Calhoun Station was generally characterized by safety conscious operations, sound
'
engineering and maintenance practices, and careful radiological controls However, one
cited violation of NRC requirements was identified. The violation involved a failure to
evaluate and properly authorize deferral of preventive maintenance.
The violation is cited in the enclosed Notice of Violation (Notice) and the circumstances
-
surrounding the violation are described in detailin the enclosed report. Please note that

you are required to respond to this letter and should follow the instructions specified in the
'
enclosed Notice when preparing your response. The NRC will use your response, in part,
to determine whether further enforcement action is necessary to ensure compliance with
regulatory requirements.
